Mountain Gateway Scenic Byway

in southeast Oklahoma follows U.S. Highway 59/270 for 22 miles between Heavener and the Arkansas state line. The drive rides through the forested valleys of the Ouachita Mountains. The byway treks through the 26,445-acre Winding Stair Mountain National Recreation area. Numerous side roads and other scenic byways invite the traveler to explore these heavily forested mountains. Wildflowers in the spring proudly display their colors while autumn also puts on its own beautiful show.

Talimena: Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When is the best time to view the fall foliage?

A: The leaves start turning around the end of October and there is usually color until the middle of November or later depending on the weather. To see the most color plan to visit the last week of October or the first week in November. Each week after the 15th of October, the Talihina Chamber of Commerce posts a color update and pictures on their website (www.talihinacc.com). Lodging information is also available on this website.
