Oklahoma Byways Program 2007 Project Awards

 

Cimarron Heritage Trail Byway: Corridor Management Plan $86,640.00-Boise City

Abstract: A corridor management plan (CMP) will be developed to preserve, promote and protect the byway. Byway travelers will benefit from a well-prepared CMP through the provision of consistent information and the implementation of projects designed to enhance the traveler experience.

 

Route 66: Miami Interpretive Signage Project $120,000.00

Abstract: This project will significantly improve the Route 66 traveler experience by providing directional signs to historic sites, creating interpretive markers to highlight the significance of each site to the development of Route 66, reconstructing the Miami gateway sign that spanned the original Route 66 and welcomed travelers to Miami in the 1900s, and reconstructing the Ozark Trails Milepost Marker to highlight the history and importance of the Ozark Trails to the development of a national highway system and its incorporation into Route 66 in Oklahoma.

 

Route 66: El Reno Route 66 Banners $43,520.00

Abstract: This project will fund 272 banners to welcome byway travelers to El Reno as they travel Route 66.

 

Talimena Scenic Drive Interpretive and Visitors Center $37,486.00

Abstract: This project will fund the design plans for the rehabilitation of an existing structure to be used as an interpretive and visitors center for Talimena Scenic Drive (one of America's Byways) and two state byways (Mountain Gateway and Mountain Pass). The building is located in close proximity to all three byways, and upon completion will offer residents and travelers a place to relax, interact with nature, and learn more about local culture and history along the byways. Route 66: Youngheim Centennial Plaza $105,600.00 Byway-Route 66-El Reno Eligible Category: Byway Facilities Abstract: This project will fund a fountain as part of the final phase in the completion of Youngheim Centennial Plaza, El Reno's Oklahoma Centennial Project. When completed, this pocket park will be a tourist destination. Centrally located in downtown just off the intersection of Route 66 and the Chisholm Trail (U.S. 81), visitors to this "Crossroads of America" will have a chance to sit, relax and reflect on the history of the Mother Road while taking in many of the amenities and activities of the historic downtown. Plaza amenities will include an interactive fountain, benches, walkways, restrooms, and a commemorative monument honoring the town's namesake Civil War hero Major General Jessee Lee Reno. Already a major gathering spot, over a dozen festivals a year are held at this site.

 

Route 66: Special Planning Districts $40,000.00

Eligible Category: Resource Protection

Abstract: This project will develop a corridor management plan to help preserve and enhance a 14-mile segment of State Highway 66. As part of the plan, three special planning districts will be established and zoning criteria developed to preserve the corridor while promoting economic development.

 

Mountain Gateway Trails Brochure and Website $63,371.00

Byway(s): ; OK - Mountain Gateway Scenic Byway - Oklahoma; OK - Mountain Pass Scenic Byway - Oklahoma; AR- Talimena Scenic Drive - Arkansas

Eligible Category: Interpretive Information

Abstract: A traveler's guide and complementary website will be developed to promote access to and travel along one National Scenic Byway (Talimena Scenic Drive) and two state scenic byways (Mountain Pass Scenic Byway and Mountain Gateway Scenic Byway). Both will facilitate trip planning through the provision of information about the byways, points of interest, and the location of dining and lodging opportunities; all intended to provide a more complete traveler experience for visitors to the byways.

 

Wichita Mountains Scenic Byway: Geological Plaza and Visitor Center $73,320.00

Eligible Category: Interpretive Information

Abstract: This project will welcome travelers at the northern end of the byway by providing them a chance to stretch their legs and learn more about the geology, history and culture of the area as well as points of interest along the byway. The visitor center will offer a variety of amenities including drinking fountains, benches, picnic areas, travel information kiosks and map boards along with easily accessible parking. The focal point will be the Wichita Mountains Geological Plaza which will contain ten interpretive displays highlighting the history and the geology of the ancient Wichita Mountains.

 

Route 66: Cultural Crossroads Interpretive Intersection $385,000.00-Tulsa

Eligible Category: Interpretive Informatio

Abstract: This project will identify an intersection of Route 66 in Tulsa as an interpretive site. Thematic and interpretive features will be utilized to incorporate all four corners of the intersection, the original buildings and neighborhood elements into a walkable historical and educational experience. Project elements include period lighting, seating, fencing, a town clock, interpretive panels, and textured crosswalks. This project benefits the byway traveler by creating an urban destination point on Route 66 for motorists traveling west through Tulsa. Travelers will have a chance to park, learn more about the significance of Route 66 to the region, and stroll through the surrounding historic neighborhood and park.

 

Talimena Scenic Drive: Corridor Management Plan Implementation (Year 2) $24,000.00

Eligible Category: Corridor Management

Abstract: This project will provide consultant assistance to implement the goals and objectives outlined in the byway's corridor management plan (CMP). A marketing plan will also be developed and incorporated into the current CMP. The consultant position will help ensure the long-term sustainability of the byway and the association by providing consistent project oversight and implementation. Byway travelers will benefit from the provision of well-crafted marketing initiatives designed to promote and educate visitors about the byway and the region.

 

Route 66: Visit Bristow Marketing Materials $6,411.00

Eligible Category: Interpretive Information

Abstract: This project will promote Route 66 in the Bristow area through printed materials including a community attractions map and rack cards highlighting local events and attractions. This project will benefit the byway traveler by providing ready access to information on things to see and do along the byway.
